Gun Safety

Rule Number One: If you do not know how to use a gun, NEVER have one in your home.

Rule Number Two: If you have guns and have children, every gun you have should have a trigger lock on it, and all guns should be locked in a gun safe - and always keep the keys with you!

The article is not meant to argue whether or not one should have guns, but only to present how to safely own guns and use them - for several different reasons. Let 's discuss those.

Hunting: Many gun owners are hunters, and since they rely on their guns they know how to take care of them. They also probably have learned at an early age how to use them properly.

Police: Police officers and related personnel who must carry guns for their work are well trained in their use. But again, the security of those guns when they are home is paramount.

Self-Defense: Many people use their guns for occasional target practice and for self-defense. If an armed intruder breaks into your home, chances are you will be shot if you don't know what you're doing and aren't well trained. Also, the only way you can properly defend yourself is if your gun is loaded - and again, unless you live in a home with adults only that is of no help. Buy a burglar alarm instead.

Many states now allow you to get a concealed weapons permit by merely completing an application, having a criminal background check and taking a gun safety course. That allows you to carry a concealed registered handgun everywhere except bars, hospitals, sporting events, schools and a few other places. Is it worth it? In my opinion, no! Are you prepared to use it with deadly force if necessary? If so, does that attitude prevail in your thinking? Is it really something you want to do? Take a long, hard look at this rule before you consider applying for what is known as a CCW.

In transporting guns to target ranges, hunting sites or anywhere for that matter, they must be unloaded, in cases and in your trunk. And remember the common sense gun safety items: (1) Never point a gun at anyone; (2) If hunting, never climb into a tree stand with a loaded gun; (3) Always keep the safety on; (4) Perhaps most important, ALWAYS know what you are shooting at. Most states require hunters to wear bright orange clothing. Now, I've never seen a bright orange deer, but every single deer season several hunters get shot. If the hunter doesn't have antlers and a white tail, he probably isn't a deer, even if he's not wearing the required bright orange. KNOW YOUR TARGET!!

Finally, one tip about the use of guns for self-defense in your home. If your life is in danger, and you shoot the intruder, it is justifiable self-defense. The key is simple: Is your life in danger? If someone lunges at you with a knife or pulls a gun or is 7' tall and threatens to rape you, that's justifiable. But if an intruder doesn't have a weapon, call the police. Only if you are endangered, should you take such action.
